4th Long Night of Science in Konstanz

Climate protection and applied research in Mainau island – The project „ENsource“

On 13 May 2017, the fourth scientific night of Konstanz took place. Together with colleagues from the Mainau Company (Daniel Ette and Theo Straub), energy targets and further project goals (e.g. energetic usage of waste) were presented.

After a short introduction, it was possible to get in contact with the speakers within a poster session. The focus here was on biomass usage and different scenarios for a sustainable energy supply on the island. Annette Steingrube (Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems) presented different renewable energy scenarios. Christoph Hank (Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems) talked about the synthesis of biofuels (methanol) based on biomass, also known as power-to-liquid technology. Gregor Sailer from the University of Applied Forest Sciences showed different concepts for the energetic utilization of bio-waste. Furthermore it was possible to have an insight in the wood gasifier plant (already operating on the island).

In total, visitors across all age groups were able to gather information about different aspects and challenges on the road to a sustainable energy supply on the island “Mainau”.
